If you were not already aware recent legislation now requires that every child is to have their own passports.
Before 5 October 1998 children could be included on a parent's passport. Any passports including children will have expired on or before 4 October 2008. If your child was included on your old passport from this date you will need to:
• Renew your own passport
• Apply for a separate first child passport for any children aged under 16 years
Children who are in care or have been under the care of foster parents need to meet additional legal requirements before a British passport can be issued.
How to know when a child is too old for a child passport
If your child is currently under the age of 16 they will need to have a child passport issued under their name. Please bear in mind that they are still able to use this passport until it expires (an example would be that if a child aged 15 applying for a 5 year passport will be able to use this passport until they are aged 20 years).
Do you need to renew a child passport?
Under the current legislation you are able to apply to renew a child passport if you still have their last passport and:
• It was a standard five-year child passport
• You do not need to change their name or national status
• It is not damaged
Please note you can apply to renew a child passport at any time. If there is any time left on the old passport the Information and Passport services will add any outstanding months onto the new passport up to 9 months in lue.
